Health and Equity: My Journey of Transformation and Social Justice
Hello. I'm Magaly Blas, born on a spring day. As a woman, mother, public health physician, researcher, and activist, my life has been woven around a passion for health and equity.
I love swimming in the ocean. This activity represents my connection with nature and is a metaphor for my life: moving forward with strength and determination, regardless of the current.
As a child, I accompanied my mother, Carmen, to rural communities in the Peruvian mountains of Ancash, where she supervised social development projects. From that moment on, I understood the profound inequalities in access and opportunities and how these directly impact the health and well-being of communities.
Throughout my personal, educational, and professional life, I have made it my mission to build bridges toward social justice, especially for those populations with the least access to healthcare, education, and basic services. Through projects such as “Mothers of the River” and "Ikara," I have sought to innovate and transform alongside the communities I work with, demonstrating that research is not an end in itself but a vehicle that should serve to achieve changes that improve people's well-being. Every day, every study, every intervention is a step toward a world where health is a universal right, not a privilege. As a mother, I dream of a future where health equity is the norm, not the exception, so that our next generations can grow up in a more just and healthy world.
